May-November is the only time of the year that you can watch the Humpback Whales migrate between Antarctica and Queensland, Australia. There are plenty of companies on the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast you can do this with. We decided to go whale watching on the Gold Coast with Sea World Cruises.

Whale watching with Sea World Cruises

Sea World Cruises Gold Coast

Arriving at Sea World nice and early in the morning, we proceeded onto our boat, docked in the shelter of the Broadwater. The cruise would take us out to sea off the coast near Surfers Paradise. The boat has three seating areas onboard, one inside, one at the front of the boat and one up top. Once we were out at sea we chose to sit upstairs for the spectacular (yet very windy) views.

We were convinced after about 10 minutes that we would not get to see any whales. Then, one of the spotters up top with us yelled out to a crew member, pointing in the direction in which he saw some movement in the distance. The boat slowly made its way closer to the area. At last we got to see these mighty creatures creating the most powerful noises upon the oceans surface.

We got to see two groups of Humpback Whales and the show they put on to warn the other group to stay away was spectacular. They jump out of the water and powerfully smack their flippers repetitively, creating a thunderous noise. This display of power will last until the other group moves on or they decide there is no threat.

How much does whale watching on the Gold Coast cost?

The tour with Sea World Cruises goes for about 3 hours and costs $99 per adult at the time of writing. You can buy combination tickets for a few extra dollars to gain entry into Sea World after your tour. If you are visiting the Gold Coast between May and November or you are looking for something to do during the day, we recommend going whale watching on the Gold Coast.
