Seeing as I only get a birthday every four years (I’m a leap year baby), I took my sister out of school for the day and headed into London. All dressed up for a big fun filled day, we caught the early express train to Waterloo and walked straight over to the iconic London Eye. Not only were we treated to the most amazing 360 degree views of the city, we were also treated to watching a film crew filming in the next capsule to us. My sister was very excited at the opportunity to even have the slightest chance of being caught on film.
Once the 40-minute rotation was over we decided to stroll through the city and make our way to the Natural History Museum. In reality I thought this would be a fun and easy notion… I can assure you it was not. Being distracted by the beautiful neighborhood of Chelsea, we took a wrong turn and ended up back around the block, which added an extra 40-minutes to our walk. Not wanting to give up, we laughed the frustration off and headed the right way this time.
Little did I know Harrods was up the corner from a museum I have wanted to see for years. Once we got to the museum we headed to the cafeteria for some lunch, which was well deserved from our 2.5+ hour walk through the city. Anyone that knows what a 13-year-old is like when they are hungry, knows you feed the hanger straight away! To be honest I did feel a little disappointed by the natural history museum. Too much build up intends to lead you to disappointment.
Then there was Harrods! Now if you LOVE designers then this is the place for you. Looking at it from the outside you would never have guessed it would have been seven floors. At the time I didn’t know about the Diana memorial on the lower level, to which I couldn’t believe slipped my mind. Wandering around the levels with my jaw on the floor adding things to my imaginary shopping list, I couldn’t believe how many people could actually afford half of the things in here. It was a fun experience though and we left with a free glitter tattoo from a staff member in the kids department.
To me the best way to end this day was with dinner and a show. Wicked! Wicked had to be the show my sister and I would experience together. After our delicious meal at II Posto and some birthday cake, we wandered over to the Apollo Victoria Theater for Wicked. I have had many people tell me about this musical and all I can say is WOW! The performers were sensational and the play was riveting. There was not one part of the show that we did not enjoy and defying gravity was played to me by my sister for days after.
What was your favorite way to spend a special birthday?
